Jabal Shams stays cool while Oman swelters

Muscat: As temperatures across Oman continue to soar, with Fahud recording 48°C in the past 24 hours and several locations crossing 46°C, one place remains a refreshing exception. While much of the Sultanate endures intense summer heat, Jabal Shams — Oman’s highest peak — recorded a minimum temperature of just 15.3°C, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Perched at more than 3,000 metres above sea level in the Al Hajar mountain range, Jabal Shams enjoys a climate dramatically different from the rest of the country. The mountain, whose name means “Mountain of the Sun”, is the highest point in Oman and one of the coolest locations in the Arabian Peninsula. During summer, temperatures in Jabal Shams often hover around 20°C to 25°C, while nearby lowland regions experience temperatures exceeding 45°C.

Meteorologists point to altitude as the primary reason. Air temperature generally decreases with elevation because the atmosphere becomes thinner and air pressure drops. As air rises along mountain slopes, it expands and cools naturally. This phenomenon, known as the environmental lapse rate, means mountain regions can be significantly cooler than areas at sea level.

Jabal Shams sits more than three kilometres above sea level, placing it far above the heat-trapping desert plains of central Oman. Studies of Oman's mountain regions indicate temperatures there are typically 10°C to 15°C lower than on the coastal and interior plains.

The mountain's rugged terrain also contributes to its pleasant weather. Higher elevations are exposed to stronger winds that help disperse heat. The thinner atmosphere absorbs and retains less heat than the dense air over low-lying deserts. Clear mountain nights further allow heat to escape rapidly, causing temperatures to drop sharply after sunset. This is why Jabal Shams can experience near-freezing temperatures in winter and pleasantly cool nights even during the peak of summer.

Tourism authorities often describe Jabal Shams and neighbouring mountain destinations as Oman’s natural summer retreats. While average summer temperatures across much of the country range from the mid-30s to above 45°C, temperatures in Jabal Shams can be around 15°C cooler, attracting residents and tourists seeking relief from the heat.

The contrast was clearly visible in the latest CAA weather readings. While Fahud, Hamra Al Drou and Samail recorded temperatures between 46°C and 48°C, Jabal Shams remained the coldest location in the Sultanate at 15.3°C — more than 32 degrees cooler than the hottest spot recorded during the same period.

As Oman enters the peak summer season, Jabal Shams once again demonstrates why it remains the Sultanate’s ultimate natural air conditioner, offering cool mountain breezes while the rest of the country sizzles under the desert sun.
